We repair the freezer compartment of a refrigerator. We don't work on chest freezers or standalone uprights. Here is what usually goes wrong.
Frost that looks like an avalanche
When the door gasket stops seating, warm air leaks in every time the compressor rests, and frost piles up fast. The gasket is where we look first.
A sheet of ice on the freezer floor
Ice spreading across the bottom usually starts at the defrost drain. Once the drain is blocked, the meltwater has nowhere to go and refreezes.
A freezer that's cold while the fridge isn't
The cold air is made in the freezer and moved to the fresh food side by a fan. If that evaporator fan motor quits, the freezer stays cold and everything else warms up.
Neither side is cold
If the lights work but both compartments are warm, we'll ask a few questions on the phone first. That pattern is a sealed system problem about three times out of four, and that's seldom worth repairing.
