Newer machines rely on a pressure sensor to tell them how much water is in the tub. If the sensor reads wrong, the washer never calls for water and just sits there.
An older refrigerator
Food freezing on the shelves of an older unit often comes down to the cold control. It's a simple part compared with what replaced it.
A newer refrigerator
On electronic models the same symptom can be a sensor or the control board, and a dark control panel usually points to the board or the user interface. Both are normally worth repairing.
